As opposed to how Drogo treated the female members of his Khalasar, he waits for Dany to consent and tries to please her and soothe her the best he can despite the language barrier; which sadly happens only in the book and not in the show. It's a fucked up situation in a fucked up universe, and pretty rapey anyway, but it's made plenty clear Drogo would have gotten both of them killed by his Khalasar if he hadn't consummated the marriage.

I'm afraid there would be no story if Westeros wasn't a Crapsack World. Of course people are free to dislike the books/shows as a whole, or to like them and still be critical of the issues presented (as I do); but to keep on reading/watching just to spew hate all the time strikes me as quite dumb (and tiring).

Am I the only one who remembers that Drogo forced himself on her every other night after the wedding? And that it hurt her brutally to the point of tears? And that it was so awful for her that she nearly considered killing herself?

It was rape in both the books and show, people just seem to conveniently forget the stuff I mentioned for some reason. I blame the messed up Dany/Drogo shippers and Drogo fangirls.

Srsly this. When I watched the show I was pretty put off by the wedding and then people on the internet talk about how much more considerate and non-rapey Drogo is - cue me reading the books and being severly disppointed :( It was so odd that he only treats her good once and then it goes all out the window.

I remember it quite clearly, and I acknowledge it's problematic. The idea that "after giving consent once, you're giving consent FOREVER to your husband" is deeply fucked up. It's also consistent with the Crapsack World presented in the books. And still one of the less terrible relationships in all the saga.

Honestly, if you're reading ASOIAF with any expectation for it to be a deep and moving tale about the nobility of humans in a violent world, you're reading the wrong saga. The whole premise of the books is that Humans Are Awful. Even the nicest ones have to learn to manipulate and lie to survive (Re: Sansa, and Sansa indeed is one of the best characters because she learns to play the game while remaining kindhearted. She's sad and lonely, but she doesn't lose herself despire the overwhelming adversity surrounding her, nor gets killed or maimed - which can't be said about Ned). I refuse to apologize for liking ASOIAF. I like happy endings, thoughtful characters and artistic literature. I also like confusing and melodramatic plots with characters being bastards. Depends on my mood.

(And no, I'm not a Drogo fangirl nor a Dany/Drogo shipper, but thanks for trying?)

I didn't imply that you were, that was just me being bitter towards Drogo fangirls who are all OMG HE'S SOOOO HAWT AND SWEET DANY/DROGO OTP DANY IS SO LUCKY LOL <333333 while forgetting that he's, you know, a rapist.

This fandom is so dumb with who it picks and chooses to like. Case in point, Sansa getting shit on constantly for behaving like a realistic little girl, while everyone bawls their eyes out over some one-dimensional plot device like Drogo dying because he's, what, "badass"?

Drogo's death only made me sad for Dany's sake, because by that point - whether or not it's realistic, whether or not it's squicky - fact was by that point she'd fallen in love with him, and I was sad for her.

But I'm still kind of blown away that Drogo...has...fangirls? what

Did Dany tell him no after the first time? It's been long since I read the book bit I kinda got the impression that she just went along with it and the consent after the first time was implied (it doesn't mean it's right) and she just suffered in silence because there was no common language between them.

This is a good comment, and a great point. Westeros (and the rest of the lands in the book) being fucked up is a huuuuge part of what makes the story work.
