Wait, this is different from the average fandom, how..? I've yet to be in a major fandom where the fic isn't primarily immature. The bulk of fic and fanworks are always going to be trash, but there are always a few gems out there that make it worth it. Look for good rec lists or something instead of perusing FF.N maybe?

My thoughts exactly. Yeah, anime fandoms tend to have younger fans, but the garbage to good fic ratio is usually about the same as other mediums. I'm not in this fandom but considering there's over six thousand fics on ff.net alone, I'm sure there's a few gems to be found.

I come from a fandom where it was populated by many older writers (30s, 40s etc)
so badfic was significantly less.

Not that there wasn't any - it just tended not to focus on dumb tropes.

Sorry that would deanon me. But try some TV fandoms. They have good fic. Or like, I hear Inception has good fic as well. MCU?

(Again not saying there isn't bad fic at all... but wading through it is much less frustrating)

So... fandom writers are like wine, the older the better?

Yes

I suppose as I grew older I tired of reading melodramatic crap.

not quite, older writers can also write their own crap and the smugness isn't endearing.

save for a very few special cases, ALL writers age like wine. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking I think it is fair to say that most of the best fic comes from writers who are at least out of their teens.
