Words you pronounce wrong in your head

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Even though I know the correct pronunciation I always read "tsundere" as "sun deer". And it makes me picture a tiny sun in the shape of a deer.

I kinda want your sun deer to mate with a teal deer and have blue star babies now.

To answer your question, the non-silent E in "hyperbole" mocks me.

I don't know why but when I see numbers, I pronounce them in my native language in my head even if the text's in English.

"So you see there are 14 eggs" becomes "so you see there are quatorze eggs".

Heh, I do the exact same thing, but the other way around. *native English speaker, tries to read French whenever possible to retain the little she still remembers from school*

I pronounced quinoa wrong for a long time. But to be fair, so did the first person I heard use it.

My MIL pronounces it "kee-wah." Drives me nuts, only because it's so close.

Maybe stupid, but as a non-native speaker I always though that in English "Chile" was pronounced as in "mile".

I have a frequent problem where I first learned a word by reading it and have been pronouncing it wrong my whole life. Sometimes I even know the correct pronunciation but don't realize it's the same word as the one I mispronounce.

Most recent discovery: "lapel" does not rhyme with "maple".

wait uh, how do you say "tsundere"? /actual serious question

...I have words like this all the time. Don't remember very many off the top of my head. Sometimes the correct pronunciation really bugs me.

in hindsight arc-ive does sound better than arch-ive but it's one of those 'read the word before ever hearing it' and it took me a while to say it right. Still sometimes think of it like that though.

Epitome

And demonstrative, gyro (the sandwich), mauve, respite, asterisk, cavalry, and oh so many others. Thesaurus, for some reason, makes me fall into a lisp.

Judo.

It drives me mad. I studied Japanese and am pretty good at proper pronounciation, but the word always gets pronounced as "yudo" in my country. And since that's the way I learnt to say it since I was small, I have to make an honest effort to pronounce it correctly - only if you do that, nobody knows what the hell you're talking about.

I'm a big Trailer Park Boys fan and I tend to pronounce "jalapeno" the way Ricky says it (juh-LAH-peh-no) in my head because i think it's funny but I almost said it that way out loud to a waitress a couple of weeks ago and I had to stop myself.
