I self publish, mainly because it's easier to make money and my most important goal right now is to be able to live alone. My "real" writing isn't particularly marketable or lucrative either way, but I'm working on some straight romance on the side, which isn't very difficult to succeed with at all. It just depends on what your goals are, I guess.

If you don't mind answering, about how much do you make self publishing the romance on the side? I'm looking into doing something similar, and I'd like my goal to be able to quit my job and make enough based on that to live. Not looking to make a fortune, but I've read you can do okay churning out cheap romances.

I haven't personally published that yet, but I know of people who've made 40-80k on a single book or who have gotten into the hundreds of thousands with a series, largely from the post-50 Shades billionaire trend that's still popular. Others I've heard from have been able to make at least a few thousand right away, so even if the first book blow up the charts, working your way up to a decent non-fortune income doesn't take years and years. This page explains sales rankings: http://www.theresaragan.com/p/sale-ranking-chart.html, so when you're looking around at the romance charts or self-pubbed romances individually, you can get an idea of what people are making based on their prices (70% royalty for $2.99-9.99 if you don't know this already, going lower is only worthwhile for promotional things like shorts or the first book in a series). I've seen people try this and do very badly, but they're usually extreme novices who are honestly terrible at writing fiction, and/or they haven't done any research and have no understanding of what romance is about and what the audience wants. On Writing Romance by Leigh Michaels is a good overview that's very much geared toward beginning writers, so you have to skim a lot if you've been around a while, but I've learned so much about the genre. And Smart Bitches, Trashy Books is a great site for honest reviews and discussion.

Holy shit, selling an average of 40 books per day at 9.99/book can net 100k/year.

Wow.

Yeah, it's usually only the big publishers who charge that much, but you can really clean up at these rates. The average royalty for published paper books is something like 6%, so I didn't have a very hard time deciding to do it myself with ebooks instead.
