Yeah, that would be weird. But as a whole, Pokemon are not considered sapient. Meowth was only portrayed that way so him talking would make sense and the gags that could follow.

Besides which, going back to the original point: merpeople are still fundamentally humanoid. You (general you, idk about you personally) don't get a major squick from humans dating vampires, werewolves, humanoid aliens, etc. in fiction, the way we would with dogs or cats. Pokemon are not fundamentally humanoid. Even the ones who look somewhat like humans are still very, very different.
