It's more like for the longest time I was indifferent and uninterested in him, but recent stuff finally made me empathize with him, I suppose?
Other than that, you're certainly right that by this point in the story no one has it easy, and while some joined that trauma conga line "late" meaning that they seemed to at least have a normal life before joining the military (Jean, Connie), even they have by now been through so much shit that it hardly matters that not all of their life sucked given how much it sucks NOW.
I admit that I enjoy Eren's powerlessness and damsel in distress situations simply because I am so used to it being a big "not gonna happen" kind of thing for shounen heroes. Sure, they get rescued by mentors sometimes, but they never go through the prolonged helplessness Eren does and I especially enjoy it because this is usually the fate of female characters in shounen manga. That being sad, it's not like I don't understand why you don't like it. I just personally can't help but see it as (rare in this genre) gender reversal of a trope I usually dislike.
