The part I liked best about this secret is the 'Screw you hippies.'

Not surprised.

It's Dragnet 1967 and Adam-12. I forgot to add it.

I love both those shows too! Also Emergency! For the Los Angeles county based trifecta of public service based shows.

Re: OP

At one point I had the LAPD phonetic alphabet memorized just from these shows.

I've watched Adam-12 and Emergency! with my dad because those were shows he loved when he was a kid, and Dragnet sort of got thrown into the mix by extension, and I just adored them. I still do. So props to you OP for having excellent taste in classic TV! :D

My only complaint with Emergency! was when Johnny started growing out his hair, lol

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I also loved dragnet as a teen and was of the wrong generation to do so. :D

I really loved the documentary aspect and how they explained the boring, procedural stuff cops go through that Hollywood usually ignores.

I am confused by the 'screw you hippies' bit. Is there something objectionable about those shows that I'm not aware of?

I'm not familiar with the shows, but hippies are the natural enemy of law enforcement. Police and other segments of civilized society typically scorn the hippies and wish they would keep to their communes and leave decent folk alone.

It's funny because Jesus was a hippie.

Jack Webb really, REALLY hated hippies. Dragnet 1967 was the anti-hippie show. RIP Blue Boy.

I have watched neither shows, but I laughed at Cartman in the corner.

I grew up on Dragnet reruns on Nick at Nite (before it was a separate channel). It is surprisingly enjoyable for a slow, plodding police procedural. My parents, who were young adults when the show first aired, could not fathom why I loved it so much. In retrospect, the show is kind of hilarious, e.g. "Must be that 'Acid' we've been hearing about" and the inevitable speech about The Problems With Today's Youth (tm), but that just makes me love it more.

Also, LOL @ "Screw you, hippies!" Jack Webb really seemed to have issues with hippies!

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Do you remember the one with pre-Adam-12 Kent McCord where Friday gives that speech on the joy and pain of being a policeman? That was what made me want to be a cop more than anything. I liked that in an era of rebellion there was somebody sticking up for the stodgy old establishment.

I'm afraid I don't (I was probably too buzy gazing dreamily into Kent's eyes to pay attention to what was going on) but I'm glad you had the inspiration!
