I know! I used to spend a lot of time at garage sales and favorite second-hand book stores. Most of my books are hidden under the bed and in the closet because I have no space for them. One of the reasons I've mostly stopped buying second-hand (besides the lack of room for shelves!) is because authors don't get royalties from second-hand sales. Digital books are great that way. :>

Yes! I want my money to go to the author, but with the amount I read it's just not practical to buy everything new - I mean, even a paperback can be up to £10. I use the library where I can, but the ones round here aren't great for choice, and I kinda justify buying stuff from charity shops because at least the money's going to a good cause - but that's not the same as it going to the author. Ebooks are so much cheaper, as long as you don't mind waiting a little bit instead of buying new releases (which I don't at all).

Exactly. I kinda wish I thought about where the money was going back when I frequented second-hand shops; I didn't know how royalties worked. Plus, some of the books I was looking for were out of print and the second-hand shops were so convenient and had so many great selections!

The last couple of times I splurged on used books were charity/fundraising sales so I knew the money was used to help others at least. If I want to read new releases, I can always go to the library. ;)
