Most people on tumblr I saw were falling over themselves flailing about Mary and talking about their OT3 fantasies. Honestly, a lot of them just seem like they're trying too hard.

I thought Mary was an okay character (not great or anything, but that was mostly because she hadn't been around long and wasn't developed) until the end of the season's finale revealed her to be an assassin who shot sherlock out of "necessity" for reasons that were honestly not that solid

wow, that sounds like a classic ratings ploy.

Yeah, I guess they wanted to try and top the drama of the previous finales but it was kind of soap opera-y and dumb. It's also too bad that Moffat can only write a small variety of female characters and that he decided to go with "conniving murderer" for Mary. Assassin =/= interesting, dude.

So I'm guessing this will segue gracefully into her death to facilitate The Eternal Bachelors status quo?

That's what fandom thought the series finale was going to do. Apparently not. Maybe next time?

I was so grateful that she didn't end up in a fridge that I will cheerfully take badass ninja pregnant lady instead.

It doesn't need a ratings ploy. IIRC, HLV was the highest ratings for a while.

What exactly do you think a ratings ploy is meant to do?

I'm don't mind reading bad reviews or negative opinions before I get around to watching since antihype will keep expectations low. But that sounds ridiculous dumb. Like I'm already underwhelmed.

It was hella dumb tbh. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU, MARY. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU.

Listen, don't touch Sherlock unless you're prepared to deal with a lot of liberties with reality and good sense.

That said, once that's done, you won't feel it's a complete waste of time.
