Exactly. I understand what you were saying.

Sherlock is pretty much rife with with gay jokes, and RDJ's adaptation was full of gay subtext to the point that even the average straight male movie critic realized what was up. It's clear the people making these adaptations want to appeal to queer people to an extent without actually going the distance.

The Sherlock fans that said making Joan a woman in Elementary was homophobic were idiots because 1) Johnlock is not canon and 2) An addition of a female character does not necessarily equate to heterosexual romance (although that mindset is unfortunately prevalent). However, it would be pretty problematic if Sherlock and Joan actually /did/ hook up.
