I am always, always so annoyed that female character are only ever allowed to be perfect. They have to be pretty, stronger than the male characters and more clever, too, otherwise, they get called out as not being "~strong female characters~". The fact that a lot of self-proclaimed feminists are among the loudest in that group of whiners irritates me a lot.

I want female characters to be able to have the same weaknesses as male characters. I want weak female characters. I want ugly female characters who are not better, smarter or more capable than everyone else. I want female characters to have the right to suck as much as male characters. For every mopey, acne scarred guy in a movie or on TV, I want a female character who is just as acne scarred and mopey without getting attacked for being "not a strong female character" and getting dismissed. Because that's exactly what it's like in reality: For a woman to get the same recognition as a man, she must be twice as capable and good-looking as a man. Looking at this secret, the fact that the "conventional wife" gets dismissed and only the intelligent, beautiful and independent female character counts and the fact that this is pretty common in fandom - to dismiss the imperfect women in favour for the perfect ones - is actually more harmful than the writing of those characters itself.

I just realized that maybe that's why I like tv series Miranda and Dead Like Me, because they have imperfect female characters.
In my experience women don't have to be better than men to earn recognision. Of course, pay statistics disagree with that.

YES. This, totally.
