I liked River when she was a mystery who just showed up to tease the Doctor. And the Doctor was just left with "i don't know who she is or how she knows me but I like her."

Before they got into the oh she's amy & rory kid, and she was brainwashed, and she's the doctor's wife, but she forced him to marry her... etc.

Yep. The more they shoehorned her in, the more special they made her, and the more integral she became to so much of the plot, the less I liked her. If they'd just let her be some random archaeologist, I'd have kept liking her, but it just got to be too much piled on one character. They did the same thing with Mary in Sherlock; it's like they think characters can't be or do a few things, it's all or nothing.

It all put me to mind of that Family Guy bit that Peter says about that guy who played Crocodile Dundee: I want to see more of him, and then suddenly none of him.
