Oops, it seemed like I deleted a string too many while trying to clean up the urls. The correct link is here - http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/01/grappling-with-holodomor/282816/

My apologies.

I wonder how much of the famine was induced on purpose (crops were produced but shipped away or not shipped to areas that needed them) in order to destroy local nationalism and support Russian nationalism. Most of my misgivings about the Soviet's intent is because of how ruthlessly the government suppressed data on the event. The mismanagement of resources remind me of the Great Chinese Famine during Mao's administration, Cambodia's famine during the Khmer Rouge reign and North Korea's more recent famine.

The Soviets did not allow rural farmers to eat their own crops and confiscated seeds for next year's planting. In this aspect, I do not see how it is different from the Ireland/Britain situation. Also, the Soviet famine happened before WWII but after WWI. I'm not sure which war you are talking about.

Maybe I'll up this again tomorrow. The broken link really made things difficult. :(
