Re: Ta-Nehisi Coates/Modern European History

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)And it was artificial; Ukraine has some of the best farmland in the world and produced more than enough food. It was shipped off and tons of locals died of starvation, including at least one of my grandfather's siblings.
This happened pretty frequently in famines in British imperial territories; I know that both India and Ireland continued to export food during periods of famine there, and British administrators were more or less actively opposed to substantive relief efforts. Of course the famines in all these cases were fundamentally the result of external conditions (potato blight, drought). But the conditions were certainly exacerbated by the actions and policies of colonial administrators.
Ultimately, I don't think the gap between the two things is all that wide. It seems to me that the main distinction people draw between them comes from the fact that they tend to assume the best of the motives of the British and the worst of the motives of the Russians. And I don't think there's sufficient evidence to conclude as a certainty that it was intended as an explicit effort to destroy the Ukrainian people.
