<3 Man, I feel you. Sometimes I think how cool it would have been if all the huge mainstream fandoms were as quiet and welcoming as, say, the Lewis fandom. I love the Lewis fandom. I don't think I've actually encountered a single fan of the show who'd be as bugfuck insane as some of the Sherlock fans (well, I'm sure there is a rabid Lewis fan somewhere out there, but I've yet to see this unique specimen).

Peaceful fandoms are such a sweet thing.

Age demographics plays a big part in that IME. You won't find tweemblrs in the Lewis fandom, you won't get the drama and overwrought theatrics that's present with nearly the whole of the BBC Sherlock fandom on Tumblr.

Yes, true. And of course Lewis itself is more or less over (if we do not count Endeavour), so there is that. No new plot twists, no surprise reveals to cause drama. I'm so sick of the whole never-ending hysterics over Moffat's writing. At this point I basically unfollowed everyone who posts any Sherlock meta, because all the Sherlock meta I've seen is quite astonishing in its awfulness.

AYRT

LOL I don't even have a Tumblr account I just browse the tags. So far it's been a lot of squeeing and screaming with the odd voice of reason (to the tune of "Dude. It SUCKED.") here and there.

Series 3 was the fanfiction special. Given the overwhelmingly positive reaction it got on Tumblr I am almost 100% certain that the last shred of potential this show had, has now officially been flushed down the toilet.

Which is a shame.

Spoilers Sherlock S3E3

I have a Holmes-related fandom blog on tumblr, and when I came there I was just like "aw now I'll follow a ton of ACD Holmesian blogs and have a fresh portion of Canon goodness every day". And then I discovered that there are pretty much no classic Holmesian blogs and that the #Sherlock Holmes tag is 99% Benedict Cumberbatch.

But
the overwhelmingly positive reaction it got on Tumblr
??? All I saw was a stream of hate directed at Mary by Johnlock shippers. With some additional whining about the handshake scene. And a post about how bromance is homophobia. We must be reading different fandom circles, anon.

Actually, I like this show. I think it turned out nicely. There are characters and arcs I really want to forget (im eyeing u irene), and there are future plot twists I really don't want to come true (I think I'll stop watching it if Moriarty is confirmed to have survived), but overall the production is fine. I liked The Sign of Three and His Last Vow. Though I am nonplussed as to why, exactly, Mary had to shoot Sherlock. Does it even make sense?

AFAIU, you think the series is very bad? Why? It isn't the definition of brilliant, of course, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was "flushed down the toilet".

...and, like, that's the only reason you hate it? (assuming you're AIRT). The fandom?.. Not that it isn't legitimate, mind you, but it does puzzle me a little. There is no real connection between the quality of any work and its fans.

1st AYRT (the anon above is not me

BBC Sherlock is fine, as far as silly pastiches go. But those are really not my thing, so. Plus, from about "A Scandal in Belgravia" on, 99% of the Canon references seems to be the writers going "IT'S BETTER THIS WAY!" and basically thumbing their noses/deliberately twisting the Canon into its opposite. It's a toss-up for me which fared worse at their hands, DEVI or SCAN. HOUN, well, nobody can ever do HOUN well, but the DEVI "reference" they threw in was basically an insult to ACD and the characters he wrote.

/my thoughts on yaoi Moffat.

Ah, that makes sense. I agree (just not a deal breaker for me). Though I'm curious, have you not seen a single adaptation of HOUN that you liked? It must be the most adapted story in the Canon, and I've seen some excellent versions.

DA--this has absolutely nothing to do with your discussion, except that you mentioned that you don't have a tumblr and only browse the tags. I used to do the same thing, seeing as how my fandoms have next-to-no presence outside of tumblr. But now it's basically impossible to browse tags, since if you're not logged in tumblr will only show the most popular gif results in any tag. If you've figured out a way around that that doesn't involve setting up a tumblr and then not using it for anything but browsing, would you please share how you did it?

AYRT

Android Tumblr app -- click on one of the tags that comes up on the front page, you should get a search bar at the top where you can enter the tag you want to browse. HTH

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
well by default now it 'searches' for the word/phrase and brings up popular posts with that in the title, or tag, or subject...but if you look at the posts/gifs that come up, they should have a list of tags under each; click on the tag u want and it will bring up the old standard tag result.

Awww, I'm glad to hear that about the Lewis fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
The Lewis fandom is nice and quiet? HAHAHAHAHHAHA, I can only assume you weren't around during the clusterfuck that was Robbie and Laura getting together when the fandom went completely batshit and there had to be posts deleted from the comms due to name calling and attacks.

If you are a Lewis/Hathaway shipper it's a lovely fandom, I'm sure. But Laura/Robbie or a gen fan? Nope. In fact, there was a wanky post about Laura/Robbie just a few days ago.

Oh no, I'm not saying it has always been like this. Back in the heyday all sorts of things happened. But, even being a gen fan, I see no more fannish insanity in it now.

It may also be that the places I frequent are good places. I've never tried to browse the relevant tags on tumblr, for example.

Join us in the Power Ranger fandom...we have a bit of everything and the non forum places aren't drama inducing.

Small fandoms are a blessing. You may find the odd crazy fan, but they are easier to ignore.

Enjoy your new fandom. :)

Man, I want to know which fandom is driving you crazy. Sherlock? Supernatural? WTNV? Spill it, OP.

Glad you found a fandom you can enjoy. I really love my tiny fandom, but sometimes I think I wouldn't mind it if it was huge and Harry Potter crazy.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome, anon! Unfortunately, my old fandom was quite small and still had plenty of drama. So far I've only been able to fluctuate between "wankfest madhouse" and "One Man Fandom". :(

Actually, I take it back. My days in the Lord of the Rings fandom were pretty chill, but that was a while ago. I think the only reason we didn't have drama was because we were too young to realize how dumb and ridiculous we were. xD
