Red, maybe a little sweaty/sticky, thick with thick fingers,

In fiction it indicates that someone can't do tiny work, like sewing or whatever, or if they are able to, it's supposed to be a surprise/indicate "hidden depths".

At least, that's what I've always seen it as.
