Isn't Clara actually older than Rose? Rose wasn't even 20 when the show started. Nine/Rose skeeved me out too, though. And I've never been able to believe that the Doctor could have a working romantic relationship with someone who didn't have at least some life experience. I tend to prefer him with older people.

Is she? I don't know much about Clara but she looks really young in this secret. I would have pegged Rose for 25, actually - I never heard what her canon age was.

I find this kind of weirdly amusing because I ship Nine x Rose, and age differences with older man/younger woman are usually a big squick for me. But physically they don't appear so far apart, and I think - maybe? when it comes to characters of a different species that naturally live much longer, I'm inclined to give them a little bit more leeway on age gaps.

Rose was 19 in season 1. Clara was born in 89, so I think that would make her at least 20 when she started (at least the 21st century version). Not a huge difference, but personally makes a difference for me. 19 is still a teenage, even if technically of age. I'd feel uncomfortable with a 19 year old being paired with a 50 year old, and the Doctor is a whole lot older than that.

Clara (the original Clara we met in The Bells of Saint John) is 24 when she meets the Doctor (since that episode establishes as her being in 2013). Jenna Coleman who portrays her is currently 28.

And Moff missed a golden oppurtunity since apparently (according to the TARDIS Wiki) The Maitlands (the family she was a nanny for) lived in Chiswick. Oh Moff! You couldn't have just had Eleven catch just a fleeting glimpse of Donna? Just one?

To me, 25 would be more of a marker age. Most people aren't really mature at either 19 or 20.

*shrug* like I said, it's weird and shallow, but appearance matters to me with the Doctor and shipping. And in some ways, his general goodness and wisdom and longevity make an age gap more palatable with him than if it were just an old human with a young human - but not to the point where I feel comfortable pairing him with humans who aren't fully adult. Again, I had no idea Rose was so young. I like her chemistry with Nine too much at this point to just stop shipping it, but it does make it less appealing to me now :/

I guess for me what matters is that the show acknowledges the creepy. I like Buffy/Angel because the show doesn't shy away from the age difference and all the things that go along with that. I don't like Doctor/Rose, on the other hand, because the show plays it as just romantic and doesn't acknowledge the age difference issues.

Also, I like it when the two at least have things in common and if the younger person is mature for their age. With Buffy/Angel, they at least have things in common since she's a slayer and therefore experiences the world of demons and vampires and has a maturity level as a result. She's 16 going on 30 pretty much, though she certainly does act her age at times. Rose, on the other hand, is completely new to the world and really doesn't have much in common with the Doctor. To me that makes the age difference feel more obvious and real. Which I also feel with Clara too. I much prefer the Doctor with an older person and/or maybe someone who is a part of the large universe happenings.

Yes, it does. School Reunion was ALL ABOUT the age difference. Personally, I think the show sells the LOVE MAKES YOU RECKLESS AND INCAPABLE OF LONG TERM PLANNING rather more than 'romantic' (hence the incessant reiteration of 'forever' and Victoria being ticked off at them for being giddy when the werewolf was massacring people all and sundry), but I seem to be a minority.

Though your point on the relative innocence still stands, you can't say they didn't address it.

*nods* yeah, that does make sense.

Rose was young but she did have experience and she was always pretty street-smart and emotionally mature enough that I didn't find it skeevy. Especially since it was the Doctor who more emotionally invested in their relationship.
