Well, I just learned that what gravy is. And that there's a difference between UK gravy and US gravy.

For some reason I always thought gravy was mashed cauliflower.

Mashed cauliflower? Where'd you get that?

Also, what's the difference you have discovered between US and UK gravy? So far as I'm aware the only difference is there are a few varieties that are common in the US, but not the UK (also some US dialects use it to mean any sauce).

Apparently "gravy" sounds like it should be cauliflower to me? I don't know, I just assumed. The fact that it's a sauce is a bit of a relevaton to me; no wonder so it appears so often in fanfic. (I seem to have thought that the English speaking world as a whole has a thing for cauliflower.)

Just what discussed in the thread above; for the UK it's apparently always a sauce gained from meat, but for the US there are different kinds, one of which is made with milk.

American gravies are made with meat drippings, too - it's just there are more elaborate varieties commonly made in the US.

I make my gravy out of powder that comes in an envelope and hot water.

I make gravy from a powder that comes out of a box. It can be made with just water, but I like to add chicken stock as well.
