I think the show is good too, secret maker.

It took like 6 or so episodes to find its feet, but the past several episodes have been quite good and I like the direction the show is going.

Could you tell me some more pros and cons? I have been eyeing it, and while hetero/slash doesn't matter much to me, the amount of gen + potentially less femhate made me curious to watch it

Cons are basically that the show is a VERY slow starter. It took quite a few episodes for the characters to get any kind of development. And it spent those early episodes feeling very Case of the Week.

However, once you get past those rough first few episodes, I think that you really start to feel the camaraderie of the team and the members within the team begin to really feel developed as individuals which makes you feel more connected to the characters even when the plot isn't so great.

Also some of those one-off episodes now seem more important in light of recent developments and we can now see a larger arc and bigger stories that are going on. I won't get to specific about what those stories are because I don't want to spoil you, but yeah. There's much more direction in the show now because we have an overarching story happening in the background of the individual episodes even while there's still a bit of Case of the Week going on.

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

Pros: Slow starter but becomes well written about midway through
Female characters who are both assertive and distinct from one another
Coulson is kind of adorable

Cons:

I used to not like Skye much, either, but I've enjoyed the things she's done in the last few episodes.

Yeah, I've gone down from hate to dislike these past couple weeks.

They've managed to tone down her Wesley Crusher syndrome a fair bit by giving everyone else some delayed development.

Yeah, how Skye is horrible I've heard of, but thank you!

I think Skye's great, she rounds off the team nicely and has great chemistry with Coulson in a father-daughter way. I love all three women on the team. The guys too, for that matter.

Cons:
  • Slow starter - the first few episodes honestly suck, and do unfortunately have some racist undertones to them
  • Everyone is a bit Mary-Sue-ish at the beginning (Skye most of all, but all of them get a tint of this, except maybe May)
  • It has some...internal consistency problems, which is to be expected, given the size of the franchise (however condensed the movie-version of the franchise may be in comparison to the original comic ones)

Pros:
  • Adds in some great depth to the MCU - not necessary for MCU movies to work, but it does seem to make them better, or at least explain a few things - I am a bit of a sucker and a nitpicker for worldbuilding and this does it very well, on many levels
  • The characterization and writing get a lot better as the series goes on, and most of the Mary-Sue-ishness goes away about half a dozen episodes in (as do the slightly racist undertones from earlier in the series)
  • Going on that, while it takes a while, the series does very well in terms of representing great female characters and (eventually) characters of color - and thus far, while Victoria Hand's bisexuality, if it becomes MCU/AOS canon at all, is still in the background/"all in the manual", they do present her as a very good female character in her own right, so if her orientation ever comes up, it will be nearly impossible to make her a sexuality caricature
  • Considering the budget, it does pretty well in special effects

tl;dr - it really sucks at the start so you do kind of have to grit your teeth and bear through it, but it really is worth it, and once it's earlier issues clear up, you've got some great characters and good story, and it really does add a lot to the MCU, without making the rest of the franchise dependent on the show

The racist undertones :/

But special effects make me very happy, so I think I'll give it a go, thank you!

The racist undertones are mostly just that several of the first episodes feature the 'enemy' as a person of color, against a team whose only non-white member is Melinda May. Take any one of them on their own, it isn't a particularly big or noticeable issue, but altogether it is a bit discomforting. However, it does do a pretty good job of emphasizing that more often than not, they are more victims of their circumstances rather than evil people, and over time you do see more characters of color in other positions, and one of the original POC antagonists even comes back as a leading protagonist with agency and a great story line (that's also a bit of a cliffie at the moment...). :) So if you really do plan to stick it out, don't worry about it too much, it gets better. :D

FYI - Skye/Chloe Bennet is bi-racial.

1.) Wait, really? How so/what's her ethnic background.

2.) Mixed feelings...I mean, on one hand, no one is really presented as being part of any race, but at the same time she looks very white and there's little indication she is meant to be anything other than white. On the other hand, it's great that the actress is even partially POC. Hm...

She's Chinese-American afaik.
Here's Chloe in a Chinese pop video. ;)

re 2), the [spoiler] reveal in the latest ep strongly implies that Skye is part Chinese as well.

Oooh...she's actually pretty good in that video. Chinese and English versions.

And I hope this plays into Skye's backstory on the show. :D

I agree that it took a while to find its feet, but I'm just hoping it continues where it was going. There was so little character development in the beginning.
