Most importantly, in writing, I think you just have to trust yourself. If you feel shaky with a metaphor it won't work. On the other hand, sometimes you'll be coming up with oddball turns of phrases that still feel right somehow, and you'll have to trust your guts and go with it.

And no, readers won't always understand. This being fanfic, I've had people coming in with reviews posing the strangest interpretations. It's not really a big deal.
