Not OP

Sometimes I feel sorry for characters if everyone's hating on them, or feel obliged to point out the good points everyone seems to be overlooking if the mass reaction seems too one-sided.

Yeah, this. All the hate kinda gets to me and makes me feel sorry for the character. And their fans.

I can definitely try to be objective and bring up the positives if I feel called upon to make a defense, but I don't necessarily have to like a character to do that.

I think the point is that doing that enough times will actually make you think about those defences and then you start to like them.
