Re: "Come mothers and fathers throughout the land, and don't criticize what you can't understand..."

My dad used to pop off with slurs and stories about the 'damn blacks' that he was around in WWII (not surprising that they weren't super-excited to be pushed into the roles of cooks, drivers, etc. instead of getting to actually be soldiers) and i would argue with him about how just because the ones he met in wwii were like 'that', that not *all* of them were the same. He also had choice things to say about pretty much ever *other* race/belief out there, and we argued about that *constantly*. He surprisingly was sympathetic to and respected Native Americans.

It always baffled me, because he grew up in a multi-ethnic neighboorhood, the son of immigrant parents, and he spoke english and portugese and greek and italian and some...turkish? i think? because of all the kids he hung out with and how he'd go to their houses for dinner and stuff. But he was never, not once, rude to *anyone* in a racist way in front of me or at his job, etc. Just at home he'd grumble about stuff.

Made for a lot of fights, but he did listen to me. We both agreed that Vietnam was a craptastic and useless war.

This is basically my dad about Islam and Pakistanis. I'm not sure why, tbh. It's not like he or his family was ever involved in a war (AFAIK) or come from anywhere near Jammu and Kashmir.

It seems trite, but it really is a generational thing. I just hope my own child's generation, and the ones that come after, can finally find some way to live without any kind of racist bullshite fucking up the works.

My mom is basically so anti-Islam it's not funny. I remember we were driving past a mosque that had a Support Religious Freedom sign on its lawn and mom went into this rant about how "mooslims" (drives me nuts when she says it that way, she has like two friggin' master's degrees and yet she sounds like a subway vagrant when she gets going) oppress women and Christians and this and that.

We then drove by a Catholic church with the exact same sign. No response.

I just had the most amazing mental image of cows wearing burqas.

I've travelled a lot. I've lived in other countries and I have a lot of friends of different ethnicities (Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Native, British, Russian, black American, Mexican, Ukranian etc etc). I also grew up in a very multiethnic neighbourhood. I had that experience.

...I understand your dad completely. Racism works both ways, and once you realize that you tend to respond to it. It doesn't keep you from making friends or respecting people, but it does stay in the back of your mind and make you aware of things that are genuine cultural flaws (picking on, say, the Japanese: their worst flaw as a culture is the absolute social ostracism that comes with the perception that you're somehow abnormal, whether that's financially, physically, or mentally... that can lead to a lot of xenophobic policies and behaviours).

tl;dr Your dad is being realistic. ...You aren't.

Oh, please fuck off. Thank you.

You first. In fact, I suggest you fuck off to Somalia for six months and then come back and try to tell me there's nothing at all that's wrong with the culture there. Or hell, even Australia, where you can find men yelling at women along the main drags in Sydney at night to "show us your cunt", and nobody says shit about it. Or hey, for another Australia classic, try asking anyone at all on the street about the native people there, and enjoy the racist tirade about those "dirty abbos".

If you think there's no reason to be realistic about how much other cultures are racist, how about actually going out into the world and witnessing it for yourself sometime instead of hiding on the internet in your "safe space".

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-01-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
My dad wasn't talking about the CULTURE of anything or anyone. He was talking about 'those damn n*****s' he served with in WWII who, according to him, 'refused to drive the ambulances near the fighting to get the wounded' and about 'those damn jews' who screwed everyone over for money and 'those dirty wops' and 'damn puerto-cubans' and any other slur you can think of.

So kindly fuck off with your wha wha blah blah about cultures and sexism and tribal whatever since THAT WAS NOT WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT AT ALL.

For fuck's sake.

And you have not one *jot* of a clue about what i have or have not done in my life, so please fuck off *twice*.

And I will bet you a thousand dollars of your currency of choice that that's because he got exactly the same shit from the rest of those groups, just insert "polack" and "sister fucker", and you've got the picture. The number of times I've personally been called racial slurs escalated about five hundred percent since I actually left my neighbourhood and found out what other people act like.

As it turns out, the rest of the world is racist, and it's usually racist before you are. You're a sheltered little fool if you think otherwise.

Just because the rest of the world is racist doesn't make racism any less terrible or bullshit.

Yeah, no, he didn't. He liked his neighbors, they had good times together. He was Portuguese, not Polish. He always talked with fondness about his neighbors.

And you're a whiney jackass who is attempting to 'prove' the chip on your shoulder is valid by pretending to have a clue about things that happened to a dead man eighty years ago. Once again and for the last time - fuck off.

You must have seen some of the worse parts of Australia, because not every Australian with rant about "dirty abbos".

I don't know where you live, but I can tell you that there are a ton of people "in the street" who don't refer to Indigenous peeps as "dirty native abos". Just because everyone's racist, just because some countries are a hell of a lot more racist than others, doesn't mean racism should just be shrugged away because "DURR, IT'S OBVS TOTES WORSE IN SOMALIA".

(Yeah, I know I'm feeding the troll.)
