I do this too, it's so much fun to tweak the noses of the haters!

BTW, speaking of Marvel movies fandom, you should consider adding Pepper Potts to your lineup of favorites. Pepper gets a lot of hate from people who want Tony with someone else, the Steve/Tony shippers are by far the worst, but many times the Loki/Tony shippers and even some Bruce/Tony shippers manage to be politely disparaging of her while readying their misogynistic knives. It's disgusting.

That's really disappointing. In my corner of the MCU I managed to miss that for a while, and it seemed like I'd found an oasis of respectful multishipping and ship-and-let-ship... but then I started noticing the Pepper-hate, which is awful because Pepper is amazing. And I hate that so much of it comes from Steve/Tony shippers, because I like Steve/Tony.

Really I like pretty much all the MCU women except for Darcy, who I never really clicked with but huge swaths of the fandom seems to adore.

I liked Darcy right up until she suddenly became popular. Now, fanon!Darcy has kind of overtaken canon!Darcy and I really don't like fanon!Darcy. I keep this to myself, though, because one of my friends in RL runs a very popular Darcy RP blog on Tumblr, and...she is the sole reason I can no longer assume that certain levels of fandom insanity are just people playing around or hamming it up for fun.

As for the Pepper-hate - I actually hadn't seen that much of it except for the aftermath of Iron Man 3, which was just a boatload of Pepper bashing. Mostly, people were pissed off at her for 'abandoning' Tony in his time of need, which had some really misogynistic and 'coddle the victim' undertones to it. -_-

Ugh, yeah, I remember how fandom reacted to that scene in IM3. Pepper had every right to freak out at what happened, and be upset with Tony for reacting to his PTSD symptoms by installing mental controls for his suit instead of telling her he had a problem. I doubt Tony would've been much more comforted if she'd stuck around for the rest of the night and he'd accidentally broken her arm in the middle of his next nightmare. Really what happened was neither of their faults, but Pepper wasn't wrong for needing some time alone where she felt safe after what happened. I don't see why that was so hard for so many fans to understand.

I guess it's a sad commentary on the state of fandom that the rational-minded among us are not surprised at just how idiotically clueless these haters can be.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Pepper Potts and it's really runover from hating Gwenyth Paltrow since I don't ship anybody in those movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Pepper Potts =/= Gwyneth Paltrow. Get your head screwed on straight.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever, man. I hate the movies and most of the characters. It's not just her.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
No one is forcing you to watch the movies. If you hate them that much, then stop watching them and stop acting like a dick and spoiling the fun of people who do enjoy them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
What are you talking about, weirdo? I don't go into Iron Man spaces and say Holy shit, this movie blows! I'm entitled to give my opinion on a multi-fandom comm. The person above said "Most people hate Pepper Potts because of ship reasons," and I said I hate her for non-ship reasons. I didn't go to a Pepper Potts fest or an Iron Man comm or some shit like that. Don't get a bug up your butt because people disagree with you.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
The point is, your reasons for hating the character are just as irrational as those of the shippers. By your own words, you've admitted that you're unable to separate reality from fiction, actress from character, just as the Pepper-hating shippers can't seem to accept that their ship is not canon and as a result have taken to fandom-damaging tactics of intimidation and revisionist history to prop up their worldview.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can separate reality from fiction just fine. I just don't like Gwyneth Paltrow's public persona and know that that might have something to do with why she grates on me in Iron Man.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but you're just lying to yourself. If you really could separate reality from fiction, then you shouldn't be having any problem with Pepper Potts. But you are, and you admit that it's because you don't like Paltrow in real life. Therefore, you've admitted that you can't separate the two.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I love Pepper, but you're really just throwing a hissy fit that someone doesn't love her.

The other anon hasn't suggested they can't separate them, just that they don't want to. And why should they? You act like they're stomping all over fandom, but good god, they're making an anon comment on F!S, not spreading the "hate" all over tumblr tags.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they're not the same person, but I can see why someone who hates a certain actor/actress would be put off by the characters portrayed by them, just because they're associated with that actor/actress. So there's no need to be so rude about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
What's rude is people who irrationally hate spitting their hate in the faces of people who love. Defending haters only encourages them to be jerks and turns fandom toxic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
You're overly invested and you realllly need to relax.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT buuuuuuuut I actually have a hard time with this and have with basically any character Gwyneth Paltrow has ever played. I usually don't take issue with the character and her acting, but I'm reminded how much she annoys me IRL and just feel grumpy. (Though at least I just find her annoying, unlike some actors I dislike so much that I can't actually watch their movies.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
DA
Why do you find her annoying? I don't get the hate. Then again I don't pay attention to celebrity gossip or celebrities in general so it baffles me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
It baffles me, too, but I also find it troubling. If people really have that much of a problem separating reality from fiction, then perhaps they have deeper problems that require professional help.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Oh come on. Would you be this worked up if we were talking about, say, Tom Cruise? Lots of people have a hard time watching certain actors because of things they have said or done in RL. It's an ongoing discussion here at this comm.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
IDG that either. The only time I "hate" actors is when they're either admitted rapists or wife beaters (like Gerard Depardieu or Sean Connery) or when they advocate extremely irresponsible/dangerous/ignorant opinions and try to push them on everyone (like Jenny McCarthy or Tom Cruise). Gwyneth Paltrow? She's a great actor, that's all I care about. Doesn't beat her kids, isn't a racist, I don't care beyond that. I cringe when people dramatically claim how much they HATE someone they don't even know! It just seems so silly. What is there to stir up such a dramatic reaction?
