Cake thread reminded me...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
As a not-a-who-fan, I've occasionally found myself wondering why "tardis" doesn't flip any social justice switches (not like they could get them to change pop culture, but I never see debate about it). I always have a split-second reaction to the word... Can anyone enlighten me please?

Re: Cake thread reminded me...

Probably because it's an acronym for Time and Relative Dimension in Space?

OP

Ah, I was not aware of that. Hmm I feel like if a new show came up with an acronym that spelled out a questionable word, fandom would flip their shit in a heartbeat... I guess there's something to it you have to be in the fandom to fully understand. Ah well.

Thanks.

It's an acronym (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), it's a legacy term being 50 years old, and it's clearly completely unrelated to the problematic term that it happens to sound like.

OP

Thanks. I didn't realize it was an acronym. I get the reasoning, but I'm still surprised it's given a pass, what with people not always being logical about stuff like that.

In part because it's been around a lot longer than the slang it sounds like.

I don't think Who was very well known in America until New Who. There is a very different slur that's used instead in the UK. So I think it has more to do with where the show originated than when.

NAYRT - Okay, I've Googled, and I just keep coming up with Dr Who stuff (go figure). What IS this problematic "tardis" word that is NOT related to Dr Who?

"Tard" is frequently used as am insulting derogatory slang abbreviation for "retard", which is itself commonly regarded as a derogatory term.

Re: Cake thread reminded me...

I'm assuming "tard", which is short for "retard".

What about it (before you knew it was an acronym) did you think people would be upset about?

Re: Cake thread reminded me...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming the fact that it includes the slur "tard"?

I didn't know that word. Sorry.

Variation/slang for "retard" or "retarded", and considered a slur or offensive.

Probably because it has a clear etymology that has nothing to do with the slur. It's Time And Relative Dimension In Space.

Edit: Sorry, didn't refresh the page before I responded and saw you already had half a dozen people telling you what it meant. -_-

tbh that doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with it :X

I've seen people wanking on the term "jappy" which has a clear etymology - it's an acronym for "Jewish American princess" which is also sort of negative, but I've seen people say that because it sounds like "Jap" (the slur for Japanese) it should never be used. So obviously having its own meaning doesn't always rescue a word...

Yeah, I'm sure "sniggered" has lost much of use for similar reasons.

that would actually be a shame, snigger is such an amazing word D:

I think I read it the same way as you, but my visceral reaction is more along the lines of "LOL, this looks like an insult a 13 year old boy would make up."

It's kind of hard to take seriously.
