I understand this and have struggled with it many times...really, you honestly just have to try it out and hope for the best...worrying over it, I often hinted too much and made things dull and over-explained. Even if I became concerned over something I wondered might be too vague, I would still become happy when someone spotted it, and would learn from that what kinds of techniques worked. Fanfiction is very good for this.
