Is Discworld the series with the not very good wizard, a tourist, and the Luggage, or am I thinking of something else? I've heard it was good.

That's the one. There are a number of different stories in the series, the one you're talking about is about Rincewind, the terrible but lucky wizard. My favorite series in the series are about the City Watch (Thud! is in that arc) and the Lancre witches (including Maskerade, which is basically one big loving satire of Phantom of the Opera).

I think they're really well written and fun to read, similar to Douglas Adam's writing style.
