career as a squid in the Navy

I'm very curious as to the meaning of "squid" in this context. I picture a giant squid like in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea sitting on the deck of a aircraft carrier.

There is a traditional rivalry between the U.S. Navy and Army. We have a football game every year, and the services will typically trash-talk each other. It's a friendly rivalry, but 'squid' is what the Army calls sailors. The Navy calls soldiers 'grunts.' This extends to the other services too. Marines are 'jugheads' and the Air Force is the Chair Force.

This strictly between the services. Civilians do not get involved in this rivalry.
