I wrote a conflicted love story with an age gap where the older character deliberately talked to the younger one in a supportive-almost-motherly way to push away the character who was trying to hit on her, because she didn't want the relationship.
I remember one reader commenting on that part of dialogs "It will never work between them, see how she talks to him!", because I didn't explain that the older character was picking her words on purpose.
It didn't bother me that the readers didn't get it at that point : I intended to make it unclear up until then whether it would work out or not.
Also, anyway... what you write is your version of the story. Count on readers to see it differently, always. And it's better that way. They add their own POV to the story. You can't dictate them how to feel about a topic where their experience may be vastly different from yours.
