I'm sure there was quite a bit that came from the McShep fans (and also the John/Teyla fans) but I'm not sure the rest of fandom was all that fond of her either. The thing is, if you just didn't like Torri Higginson in that role, ok fine. I liked her, but we all have different preferences. But I couldn't stand the way she got hated for things that John and Rodney got a free pass on, or how people would twist canon in order to hate on Elizabeth while acting like John and Rodney were oh so innocent.
