Re: cloud_riven - AMA :U
This isn't a particularly scenic place, but for me it is. The North Saskatchewan River cuts through the middle of the city, splitting it between the north and south sides. I like to walk to places whenever I have time to spare, and also when the weather is accommodating enough in the winter, so looking across and recognizing the familiar shapes of buildings or landscape on the other side is a rather comforting image. Crossing through, whether it's through the river valley and biking across a wooden bridge with weeds growing on it, or the busy bridges downtown, or taking the train, everyone is always looking outside to watch the water even when it's frozen over (except when you're the one driving ofc). And hell, I'm not even talking about appreciating the river valley itself and how god damn pretty and fresh it is and smells. There's multi-use bike trails riddled all the way through it, so it's basically a crime NOT to go down there. I'm super lucky that I only live a short walk away from it too.
The festivals that permeate summer means there's always some kind of outdoor live music to enjoy with crowds. Of course there's actually music-centred ones such as blues fest, folk fest, jazz, and even the various podiums at Heritage Days. The festivals that celebrate cultural diversity and local business may be more accessible to all ages, but I love the mixture of people that brings in. Downtown, there's usually something or some activity happening by the public square in front of city hall, so I make it a point to wander through on my way to work and see what's up and try any food that might be sold. I don't exactly have the means to fully immerse myself in each, yet there's always some kind of entertainment happening around these events that it's very easy to pick a day to take off, pack a lunch and go dutch to creep around the sidewalks and people watch while catching TUNES.
And yeah, the people. Aside from the obvious friends and fam, and store/centre regulars, I like meeting weirdos. Maybe not a unique thing, but I like accepting donuts from strangers, having a one-sided conversation with a cute Chilean lady on the bus about everything, finding a house that also sells tasty preserves, and accidentally going on a date with a dude I met on the street. Sure this would happen anywhere, but they're experiences with people here that I've come to identify as "only in Edmonton."
