I think that's an understandable reason to want a remake.

Really, though, what I know about this show boils down to "everyone is an asshole and then everyone dies". It doesn't appeal to me much.

Speaking as a diehard fan of the show, that is ... pretty much accurate :) It's a dystopic, operatic tragedy in space, with the best space villain of the 70s, but if you want non-ambiguous heroes (or even nice people) and a happy ending ... yeah. B7 isn't really the show for you.

"everyone is an asshole and then everyone dies, but before that they exchanged some cracking dialogue, and cared a great deal about each other without admitting it properly. also, women were consistently awesome, and the costumes were insane." :D

+1 this is absolutely correct.

also, women were consistently awesome, and the costumes were insane.

Yup. Options for women in B7: Space Pirate/Smuggler and Pilot of Alien Ship (Jenna), Space Rebel Fighters/Leaders (Avalon and Cally), Space Mercenaries (Soolin), Space Resistance Scientist's Warrior Daughter (Dayna), Space Traitorous Fascist Infiltrator (Anna Grant), or BITCH QUEEN OF THE GALAXY IN CLOTHES THAT WOULD MAKE MING THE MERCILESS WEEP WITH ENVY (Servalan).

I sort of saw B7 at an impressionable age, and came away wanting to rule the universe a little bit. Ooops?

BITCH QUEEN OF THE GALAXY IN CLOTHES THAT WOULD MAKE MING THE MERCILESS WEEP WITH ENVY

You're not wrong!

Never wrong when it comes to Servalan ;) Although the red number from 'Gambit' deserves special mention.

Holy balls, anon, you weren't kidding! She can be the bitch queen of my galaxy anyday.

+1000

But the sets were shit.

But the sets were shit.

:D The show where you get a shot of Avon accidentally breaking off a bit of a Styrofoam console, and it's not the outtakes, it's a hastily disguised part of the actual show because they've literally got a budget of around 50 pounds a week and that shit's expensive.

Ah, nostalgia.

The men's costumes deserve some mention too, considering Blake's green leather poet shirt with the ten-gallon sleeves, or the fact that Avon in early seasons tended to dress like all his clothes were made of duct tape, and in later seasons like a depressed poet biker from Vulcan.

That's totally not what Blakes 7 is about at all! Vila wasn't an asshole, and Servalan and Orac both lived! Okay, Orac was a computer, but still...

And Servalan may have been an asshole, and a murderer, and a fascist dictator, and a slave trader, and guilty of genocide, and torture, and mind-fuckery, and perverting the course of justice, and drugging entire populations into mindless obediency, and generally made the guy who slaughtered over a thousand helpless civilians then tried to wipe out all of humanity look sympathetic by comparison, but damnit--she was FABULOUS!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Servalan was the best goddamn part of that show. I loved her so much, you have no idea. Best villain ever. Predatory, fabulous, draconic, bitch queen of the galaxy, ruling with an iron fist. Getting back up after every setback thrown her way, being relentless and unstoppable and so goddamn sneaky. Climbs the ranks of one government, takes advantage of a genocidal war to make herself dictator, gets overthrown, infiltrates the organisation that overthrew her, ends the series looking dead set to start all over again. Even chained to a wall she managed to own people up one side and down the other.

I mean, the show was seriously depressing and dystopic and Servalan actually went past morally bankrupt into the black hole of utter amorality on the other side, but holy shit was she ever one of the most impressive characters ever put to screen.

And, um. Yes, I can go on like this a while, why do you ask?

That scene is my absolute favorite in the whole series.

Servalan rocks.
