Maybe Legolas is from a different type of merfolk group who has to go between land and water often enough that they can just switch back and forth at will? I'm thinking a lake, where they might have to leave occasionally when humans show up, or if the lake starts to go bad, and they have to move to a new one?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)and arwen with pearls and jewels and seaweed twined in her hair. the way the sea spray hits her and makes her glisten, but she never seems to truly get wet and the stories of witchcraft and sorcery run rampant. but for a pirate she is seen as kind and fair...as long as you don't cross her.
and lbr aragorn looks just as dirty and sweaty as he did before but im not gonna complain!!

sorry not sorryWell, my guess would be, (assuming that they still live in forests, though in the lakes rather than the trees), that Mirkwood merdolk would have tails in darker shades to help them blend in with the shadows, and fallen trees, so dark greens and browns maybe? As opposed to their oceanic cousins who have to hide in reefs/open water/from predators and have tails that are more blues/grays/ and occasionally purples?
I really love this picture of Arwen yes. Keeping it 5ever.
Hells yes he does! I mean, you have to work with pitch and stuff, right?
Maybe Minas Tirath is the name of a Very Important Port city? I know it doesn't quite fit in with the actual original plot, but maybe it was the best place for pirates and other sea farers, and a centeal hub for trade, and technically Aragorn rules it, but he makes Eowyn and Faramir (once Faramir returns from a suicide mission his father sent him on, of course) the stewards/keepers of it while he protects the seas, and his people therein?
And dwarves are still from inland, of course- it's part of the reason that they and Elves don't always get on very well?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)i think it works well enough! i mean, no matter the AU aragorn is ruler material, would be a crime not to have him put his kingly personality to use. ah poor faramir. screwed no matter the setting. what does that mean for boromir though, i wonder. i really can't see him as a pirate. more suited to some kind of enforcement on the land still. maybe he is tragically killed by some rouge sea thieves that not even the likes of aragorn tolerates. even pirates have to have some honor and standards.
but then there is the matter of the jewel in place of the ring. what could make it so special? beyond pure value because what fun is that! a true old treasure of the sea, for sure. maybe something that was once owned by Ulmo himself, and it has great and terrible powers over the seas.
oh jeez. im gonna be thinking bout this for the next week!!

Yeah... I can't think of any universe where Denethor isn't a giant dick, though. :( On the plus side, he gets a happy ending? And he'd be right on the coast, so him and his wife could go out on the sea whenever.
Well, you could still have "orcs" made of mutated/tortured sea people, rather than elves? Or slavers- historically, pirate ships were (at times) a refuge for runaway slaves? I mean, there were ships that took slaves, but...
It could still be a ring! One that has to be taken to an island volcano, maybe? Or one made of obsidian rather than gold?
I'll try and be around the next week, in the GC if you want to talk about it more? :3

Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope!
He gets his life saved by an adventurous Dwarf who is being a bit un-Dwarf-like having adventures on the sea and they go off and have epic adventures together.
Sorry, my love of Boromir cannot accept him dying. Also, the Dwarf in question is Kíli. Because of fanfic (http://archiveofourown.org/series/36072).
