That if you walk in to a con you'll see a lot of big girls. I thought that was pretty clear. And no. The people you see at the mall - It doesn't matter if they're male or female - stand out. Ironically, I knew of someone who was singled out at a convention for not seeming 'nerdie' enough, which I thought was strange, but there you have it. People that attend con's have a look.

What? So, cons have more fat people than average? And slash fans are even fatter. Con-goers have a look - apparently a fat look, and they stand out if they don't look "nerdie" enough... fat enough? What?

All the conventions I've been through have had no more fat people than an average walk in the mall. I don't know where you're getting this from, if completely from stereotypes.

My point is - why only show a fat woman when she's in the stereotypical "geek" setting? I'm wholly supportive with shows featuring a variety of body types and looks, as it represents reality more. But I disagree with your claim that geeks are fatter, and that if a show has basically no overweight women, portraying a comic relief geek girl as fat is simply realistic representation.

The cons I've been to have had pretty skinny girls for the most part. Yeah, there are some "fat" ones but they've been a tiny (lol) minority.

da
There're more strange people though, who seem nervous. And there was one "let me take a picture with you, beautiful girl" who told it to all pretty girls. And the 40something men with their 'naughty' jokes. And innumerable queues for everything. There were positives too, of course.

In my experience it actually depends of the kind of con, where it's held, and *when* it was held. So all the people who commented above may be right... about what they saw. Just mean they don't attend the same events.

Anime con in Europe? Complete variety of body types and ages these days, definitely more nerdy types 15 years ago.
Comics con in France : still mostly nerdy.
In US or Germany, from pics I see : more variety.
Buffy con in UK or US? There's a reason why a musician from James Marsters' band made fun of "fat middle-aged women" being prominent at their gigs. Though oddly (or not), Buffy events that did *not* feature James Marsters were more diverse (also with more men in the audience).

etc etc.
