Fushigi Yuugi

I would rewrite the end of Fushigi Yuugi so Tamahome and Miaka didn't end up together again, but Miaka was permanently positively changed for her experiences. We would see her thinking of her adventures often, but using them to go about her life with renewed strength and confidence in herself.

It always seemed like such a rip that those two got their happy ending and Suzuno and Tatara didn't get one. Suzuno and Tatara waited eighty years for each other, and Suzuno was strong enough to avoid being eaten alive by Byakko, with Tatara protecting her shrine all that time, but they only got to see each other as ghosts after they'd died. Did they just not ask politely enough? Was their love just not as ~*pure*~ as Tamahome's and Miaka's? It seems so unfair and kind of random. Maybe it's meant to be a reward for Miaka's final wish, but it still seems hideously unfair, especially because it kind of seemed to me, on my rewatch, that Taiitsukun was playing favorites with Miaka and her bunch.

Plus I would have made it so we had seen Nakago's background much earlier and in better detail if we had to see it--because, like, two minutes of flashbacks halfway through the final episode is really too little too late for making up a sympathetic villain. "He's a genocidal maniac with a god complex, but look, he had a sad childhood, so that means he's okay!"

It would also ensure that the OVA sequels didn't happen, so that's also a good thing. Those were all pretty terrible.

Yes, to all of this. I really enjoyed the tragic endings for the other miko and their lovers so it always irritated me that Miaka and Tamahome got their happy ending. Though admittedly I'm biased because I didn't care for them as a couple.

Nakago was a pretty terrible character and I doubt I would care for him even if his tragic backstoru had been introduced earlier.

I didn't, either. I thought they were pretty fun in the very first couple episodes, and they could have been a cute, playful pair, but then they just got bland and irritating real quick.

I agree about Nakago, too. I don't think anything could have redeemed him, but he's the creator's pet, and I guess she had to dump something in there to make him less of a monster.

I rewatched Fushigi Yuugi over the weekend so my criticisms are fresh in mind, hahahaha XP

Admittedly, it has been years since I've had anything to do with Fushigi Yuugi so my knowledge is quite rusty. IIRC, they were less irritating in the manga, especially Miaka. I didn't care much for Tamahome, he was just bland compared to the other Suzaku warriors. He does have some nice character songs though. And the way that they were forced onto you as the endgame couple didn't help to endear them to me either.

Nakago was just an utter mess from start to finish. Where would you even begin to fix him? It bugged me how much of a creator's pet he was. Damn it, he didn't need any sort of tragic backstory, Watase. It just made him even worse. Especially since that backstory came out of nowhere and just had to include rape.

The music in Fushigi Yuugi in general was pretty rockin'. I still really like the ending song.

If I had the chance, I would've cut Nakago out entirely. I don't think it really needed a central villain; I think the story could have unfolded really nicely just between Miaka and Yui, and the general setting of the story (there was already a war and poverty and stuff going on, on top of Yui's story). It could have been a nice, simple fantasy story about friendship and romance, but what we got was a little bit convoluted, with a mustache-twirling villain orchestrating All The Bad Shit.

The opening song is absolutely fantastic and one of my favorites ever. Fushigi Yuugi hss such great music, omg. Tasuki's character song Setsunakutemo Zutto is heartbreaking and so powerful Other favorites of mine are Amiboshi's Nocturne, Tamahome's voice, the Chichiri/Tasuki duet song Aoi Jiyuu, Shiroi Nozomi, Yui's I Wish and Chiriko's Akai Iitsutae. So much good music.

Cutting out Nakago entirely would be a good idea. I really wwish that was what would have happened. There'd be even more great Yui/Miaka tension and drana without him interfering.
