I like... uh... Holkins? The writer guy? He seems like a smart, basically decent guy. I would hang out with him. Krahulik seems like kind of a jerk, or at least someone who chronically refuses to think about what they're saying or doing.

I definitely agree that the esteem in which they're held is pretty ridiculous, though. They're basically just two dudes.

Krahulik is absolutely a jerk and has been since day one. I remember reading an IRC interview that was posted on the PA website back in... 2000? and they specifically wrote, ON THE WEBSITE, that Krahulik was a major asshole in said interview.

But the thing is, he realized it himself (a sure sign of being an adult) and he did come out and apologize around New Year's for being a massive douchebag, with no new incident immediately beforehand to prompt him (that's what suggested to me that it was sincere, and not his PR department strapping C4 to his balls.)

I saw that piece around New Years', and was honestly kind of impressed. I saw a lot of people reacting that they didn't think it went far enough and didn't apologize explicitly for the specific things he did - but I took it as less an apology and more a public realization and admission of some unpleasant truths about himself, and a promise to change them. I kinda have to respect that, because making that kind of brutally honest self-assessment is hard.

It's a weird situation. They've honestly had such a huge part in shaping the gaming community in positive ways, but they are also a huge part of why the gaming community is full of such manbaby assholes and bullies. They annoy me so much, because they can do so much good - and have done so - and yet they also take little responsibility for the jerky things they say and seem not to realize the negative power they have. It's only gotten worse over the years. The negative is definitely outweighing the good, at least for me, in the past year or two.

Blame Krahulik for that. Holkins, and he has outright said as much in his blog posts, does not like a lot of public exposure and generally tends to keep his mouth shut. Their PR department has probably been on the verge of killing Krahulik for some time now.

True true. I honestly wish the would have kicked him out of the whole thing. I think he only drags the name down. But then I know he has his fanboys and every time he says something insulting or stupid they do end up getting a lot of press.

They can't really kick him out, though -- he's their money-maker. Which is why whenever he opens his mouth there's a collective sphincter clench at Team PA.

There's a reason PA has distanced themselves from Child's Play. Unfortunately we still get people talking about how they won't donate to Child's Play because of Krahulik (good job keeping toys away from sick kids because you don't like someone, tumblr) though I've met people approaching it from the opposite direction who think Child's Play is a waste of money.

Krahulik definitely comes off as a less-than-intelligent asshole, and his apology was... eh, maybe too little too late? Guess we'll have to see if he actually makes any changes to his behavior or if it's just lip service. But I'm not surprised it doesn't bother most of PA's following. Their target market appears to be geeky bros.

Who are these people and why should I care?

Do you post that on every secret about something you're not familiar with?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
It was a genuine question. I don't know who either of these guys are.

If it was a genuine question then why did you write it in such a snotty way?

They're the two guys from Penny Arcade, by the way.

Penny Arcade's artist and writer.

They've done some good stuff with the massive influence they have over a chunk of the gamer community, but they've more than zeroed it out with some epic douchewaffle incidents.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me, that explains a lot. I don't read Penny Arcade.

I used to really really respect them. Read them religiously since '98, bought their books -- and while I wasn't attacked personally just seeing the way they reacted to fans over the dick wolves thing just urgh. It was just so upsetting. They used to listen to concerns.

It was like watching Spoony melt down and going from a guy that stopped making suicide jokes at the request of a fan to a guy attacking women fans on twitter for asking him not to use abusive language.

The situations aren't quiet the same I know (Noah was literally having a mental break down) but the way it made me feel was the same.

That pretty much sums up my feelings about them as well.

I only know them from watching Strip Search and I thought they were funny. They said stupid shit on the show but were always supportive of all the comic artists.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
can we talk about the comic being really crappy lately? seems like for ages now for every one about an actual game, there's ten "here's a wacky random conversation we had!"

and those fucking buck teeth

Did they not learn anything from Gilbert Gottfried's brilliant recovery? If you wield the double-edged sword of offensive humor, you live with the fact that people will be offended by this joke or that joke, so you drop it like a hot potato and move on to the next joke. Bickering about whether they were misunderstood or whether they should have gone there at all demonstrates that they're hacks.
