Now I just had this random thought that SJWs might have pissed on the films for not hiring actual dwarfs (people with the medical condition, I mean) or whatever.

...were there even SJWs back in 2001?

I don't think so. At least, not on a widespread scale. I think it was 2007 or 2008 before the first big racewank blowup on metafandom.

DA

Race!Fail!Wank was 2009 IIRC.

...is there one particular post that started all that? I always assumed it was gradual

(I got involved in fandom around early 2010)

I remember reading about Racefail 2009 on a wiki about fandom history, but I don't think I have it bookmarked. But iirc it did start with one post, and then people in their circle started responding and making their own posts and it snowballed.

Huh. Did a little basic research, and so far haven't found a "single post"; apparently it's a giant clusterfuck of lots of posts and discussions. I'll have to look into it more when I have more time.

There's a timeline of it here: http://seeking-avalon.blogspot.com/2009/01/timeline.html

So the whole thing started with this post.

I'll come across comments every now and then from members in older comms who say that SJWs weren't around before 2009 or so.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. That's before the internet generation hit uni and their first sociology class.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
LOL it's only funny cause it's true

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol yep

I know there were still the, if you will, overly politically correct angry "feminist" types (scare quotes only because I too am a feminist) but the women's studies majors didn't know how to use the internet yet

A lot of my friends were pretty anti-computer. I found it pretty isolating on the web not being a sexist ignorant jerk for a long time. "Let's not bring politics into this discussion!" etc

Yeah tho, "politically correct" is just another relatively conservative and weaselly way of saying "too progressive for me"? But with the side serve of "insincere point scoring" which is far from true for everyone who's more radical than thou. Works for some, but the term PC is so dismissive of all radicalism, I fucking hate it.

There was ginmar.
