so i make graphics. im not amazing but im not shit either. some of the stuff that comes up on my dash and has hundreds of notes is just dreadful. yes, im a spiteful hater. but is there some tumblr magic im missing? do i need to fucking network like this is a job?

i make stuff cause i enjoy farting around in PS but it's still depressing to only get like 5 notes on things :/

Do you type and spell and use wording like this on your graphics and tumblr account? Because to be honest that would put me off of reblogging anything you did.

You must not reblog very much, because that's pretty typical for most of tumblr.

Not in my circles. I can't think of a single person I follow that talks/types like the OP. Though I admit the ones I follow tend to be older, so maybe that's something to do with it.

how many followers do you have? do you talk to people? and are you using the tags?

like 100, but i suspect my follwers are the main problem. most of them i don't know and we are more like strangers. i don't have friends that really care about anything i do. but i try to be active and friendly and i always tag properly without being one of those folks that use 200 of them in a post.

How big are these fandoms?

& with tumblr's new search system (that can be altered), unless people track a tag they may not see it.

Yeah, it's mostly networking and tad bit of luck. Fanart and funny things tend to usually do better than regular old graphics too.

Make sure you're using the right tags, too.

I have about 100 followers on tumblr (most of them are porn blogs looking for follow-backs, I think) and I'll make art every now and then that I put a lot of effort into, and I can say that I'm proud of what I've made. I'm lucky to get ten notes. Meanwhile someone else I know makes really repetitive doodles (as in, has drawn pretty much the same exact thing multiple times in a similar pose) with no/flat color, and they get close to 100. Like wtf tumblr.

I know not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it pisses me off when people like and not reblog. Reblogging is pretty much the only way for my stuff to get seen. I use tags sparingly (as in, tag character, fandom, that's it) because I know tag-spamming is really annoying to a lot of tumblr users. What do?

I find Tumblr to be quite dull in their graphic preferences.

I made graphics a while ago and was sad that they got mostly ignored because they weren't bad. So, as a bit of an experiment, I took a big fandom (Dr Who) and made a graphic with a quote, and using a style that was in vogue at the time in Tumblr. Got like 100 notes in 10 minutes.

I hate how if you are a BNF everything you do is praised, reblogged and copied even if it's shit, and if you are a nobody you only get notes if you make graphics in a certain "style" that's in at the moment.

I don't make graphics for Tumblr anymore, it's just not worth it.

Do you tag things correctly?

A few of my things have gotten attention (400-800 notes or so). I put them in the right tags that I knew people tracked and whatnot, but that's not how they got big. The main thing for getting notes, I have found, is when a very popular blog reblogs it. Which is pretty much a crapshoot because you can't really predict what another person is going to reblog, or even if they will see it.

Tag it properly, accidentally stumble into a meme, appeal to the common denominator, don't act like an entitled ass over it and just get used to the fact that a 60 hour picture might get 50 notes and your silly little gif animation that took an hour gets 500.

I used to run a "ask pairing" blog. Part of it is networking and tagging. The rest is catering to the "audience". Much like styling, there's graphics trends to note.

And they usually suck, unless you learn to have fun with it.

Tagging is you're biggest tool if followers don't do much. Post your stuff in the evenings so people in EST and PST are both online and tag the most relevant stuff.

I managed to get two posts with thousands of notes by tagging it "kawaii pixels" and related terms.

1) Tag properly. Only the first five tags show up in the main tag, so if the tags go #my graphics #tiny cute kittens #super adorable kittens #hey this cat looks like my old cat fluffy #fluffy #kittens #cats, then people tracking 'kittens' or 'cats' won't see your post in the tag. (personal tags work for navigating your own blog but that's it)

2) befriend tumblr-famous people. This doesn't have to be mercenary--most followers are silent and zombie-like, so even if someone has a zillion followers if you toss them the occasional ask like "I really liked that last gifset, thanks for getting it up so quickly!" "Aww man, that last ep was AWESOME, wanna gush about it?" or whatever, like as not they'll be willing to converse, and if someone tumblr-famous reblogs you occasionally that's the quickest way to get noticed.
