Interesting. The only thing about the new films is that Bilbo is the same size as the Dwarves, while in LOTR Dwarves were taller than hobbits. So I'm not sure if the mean Bilbo to be taller or the Dwarves shorter.

I think it's more hobbits in general are a bit bigger in the movies than the books say - anything up to a foot taller. If anything, I'd be inclined to think they also scaled Dwarves up slightly, depending on what your preconceived notions of Dwarf heights are. I know my notions are very informed by Dungeons and Dragons, which, when you really look into it's history, is based on Tolkien.

I thought Gimli was a little too tall, too.

The one thing I will say is that characters like Gimli, Dwalin and Thorin I think are intended to be tall for Dwarves anyway. They're the cultural equivalent of their actors, who are all over 6 foot tall.

For LotR, they filmed the hobbits and Gimli at the same scale, it's just that John Rhys Davies is noticably taller than the hobbit actors.

Really? I saw a height chart once that said the Dwarves were meant to be taller though I can't find it.

In one of the making-of featurettes, they mention that the height ratio between Davies and the hobbit actors was just right for the height difference between dwarves and hobbits. So, they could film Gimli nd the hobbits at one scale and the humans and elves at another. Gimli is taller than the hobbits and that's because Davies is taller than those four actors.
