She played a minor character who only appeared in the first movie. Even with it being a speaking role, she's easy to miss since she probably didn't start really pinging people's memory until Star Trek.

Yea, that must be it. After Star Trek I started to see her everywhere but still never realized she was in POTC. That's pretty neat. (I loved the first POTC; should watch it again.)

Yeah, people remember the character fondly, but possibly don't realise it's Zoe Saldana who played it. I didn't know, and I'm not totally sure I would have realised if I pulled out my CotBP DVD and watched it again either, since going by that picture, her skin looks darker than usual.

I wonder how many people are also unaware that she played Neytiri in Avatar?

I'd say most people know that - it was only a few months after Star Trek, and I'd heard of her before Sam Worthington. Terminator Salvation wasn't exactly huge.
