Because clearly flipping your shit over the fact that someone who may have shitty views likes some of the same things you like, that is EXACTLY the same as having a legitimate, medically diagnosed mental disorder. And being mildly annoyed at someone doing the former is EXACTLY the same as telling someone with a legitimate, medically diagnosed mental disorder that they're making up their diagnosis.

Did you miss the parts about them being triggered? Or that fact that being this invested and irrational over something are common signs of mental illness?

Kinda why fandomwank died. Realizing that most of the people wanked were mental ill in the not funny way took the fun out of stuff.

Even if you don't think the OP is mental ill you are being cruel and dismissive for no other reason than because you can. Which is just assholish and you are probably a better person than that.

DA

I wish fandomwank wasn't so dead. I thought it had more to do with it being on journalfen and you can't post there unless you have an account. Which you can't get because signups are closed. That and the death of journal sites in general.

Overreacting does not always mean someone is mentally ill. Sometimes it means they need to quit being a little bitch about things, man up, and act their age (which I'm guessing is somewhere in their teens or early twenties).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
So they need to become less female, basically?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're really reaching here, but if you're that dead set on being outraged, knock yourself out.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Women aren't the only ones who can be little bitches, I know plenty of women who are more manly then plenty of men, and everybody needs to remember their age and act accordingly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Little bitches = bad, manly = good? You don't come across as sexist at all, well done.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Little bitch= you. You sound like an overly PC whiner who is desperate to be offended. Kudos.

Because no one ever misuses "triggered" to mean "I felt upset for five whole minutes"? Because only mentally ill people ever overreact to anything?

Have you missed the fact that nowadays the word 'triggered' has changed from a psychological symptom to 'something that upset me'? The word has practically lost all meaning to the point that assuming that someone who was triggered actually HAS mental illness and/or psychological issues is charmingly optimistic.

In fairness, the OP does say they were physically ill for a protracted period. I mean, sure, that could be hyperbole, but it's not necessarily that either.

CSB: I often get a stomachache when something upsets me. Doesn't mean it's the most over-the-top terrible thing to happen.

In other words, I agree that "triggered" is the entirely wrong word here and I'm so fucking sick of seeing the word misused like this.

OP

Sort-of confession: I made this secret a couple years ago and in fact was diagnosed shortly after with depression and anxiety disorder.

Now viewed through the lens of time and medication I'll admit the scope was abnormal, but the reasoning was sound.

I did just cut out fandom cold turkey, which leaves me sad and wondering how everyone else is doing sometimes, but even to this day I want nothing to do with that person anymore, not even indirectly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
The reasoning isn't sound but good for you for taking a step back and looking after yourself.

(And if you want to check in with your fandom friends, you still can. They (and your enjoyment of your show/comic/whatever) aren't toys that can be "taken" from you. Letting them go is a different matter...)
