See, for me, I can take "constant bickering --> sexual tension --> love", and in many situations, I love it. But lately what I've been seeing is "constant bickering = sexual tension = love", and that irritates the hell out me. It's such a subtle difference and yet it has such a big impact on the story and characterization that this little difference can make me love a story to bookmarking or close the tab and never look back.

Exactly this. There is a little difference, and I love it when it all leads to love/a relationship rather than it instantly meaning that OMG THEY'RE IN LOVE.
