Depends on the friendship, really. I'd probably ask them to clarify what they want-- just a general reaction, or concrit? And if it's concrit, how tough are we talking here? If it's a general reaction then I'd try to pick out one or two good points to praise. If the fic's really terrible, I'd try to choose the biggest problem and keep it factual rather than an issue of I loved this/I hated this. Sort of like, "I thought the characterization of X made him seem more [adjective] than in canon, and it was confusing for me. Is that your take on his personality?"


But... I'd try to get out of doing any reading or concrit at all if possible.

I've made a lot of use of "I have a hard time believing that the character who did XYZ in canon would [insert completely OOC action here]."
