Re: Ocean's Eleven (2001) (I really like the movie, but sometimes I think the commentary is better)

The Newsradio ones are mostly not fantastic but God bless 'em for trying. As I understand it, what happened is that the studio was going to put out a cheap DVD release with no extras or features whatsoever, and they basically only exist because Paul Simms forced them to include them.

That said, they're mostly... not as good as they could be. As you point out, they're often kind of preoccupied with production details. I think part of the problem is cast availability. Most of them have some production crew members who are decent, but not great. Then Dave Foley was on a lot of them, and he's a genius, and Stephen Root was on a lot and he's good. But I think Khandi Alexander is only on a couple, and Maura Tierney is only on one or two, and Phil Hartman obviously wasn't on any (RIP). Vicki Lewis was on a couple and he was okay, and then you get down to Joe Rogan on some and Andy Dick, who was on a lot.

And it has to be said - Andy Dick is awful at DVD commentaries (as well as at everything else). I honestly think he might be one of the worst people at it of all time. Because it's not just that he's incredibly annoying, it's that he makes it totally impossible for there to be anything on the commentary except him being incredibly annoying, with inane tangential free association BS. The one worthwhile thing I remember from him on the commentaries is telling a story about how apparently a guest star on one episode came on for the sole purpose of dragging him to AA. My guess is James Caan.

Anyway those are my Newsradio Thoughts for today
