But aren't they mistaken for human children in the books though? As for their character, they're meant to be fun-loving and not too serious (exceptions like Frodo and Bilbo are there of course, but they're described as being thought of as slightly weird by other hobbits), they smoke weed and sing silly songs and have parties and all that! Only a couple instances from Pippin are there for comic relief and anyone who has seen RotK at least should recognize that he is not just a comic relief character.
