So who are you related to?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by #7. Got any interesting/famous branches in your family tree, F!S?

I'm distantly related to George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who backed the expedition that discovered Tutankhamen's tomb and whose country home is where they film the "upstairs" bits of Downton Abbey. I also may have had ancestors on the Mayflower, but records are too spotty to confirm that for certain.
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

There's a chance that I am very very distantly related to the Burke half of Burke and Hare. I have no proof beyond my surname, which is an uncommon Burke variant. But it's fun to think about! XD

I only know very vague things about my family history, like on my mum's side we come from France(a couple of generations back) and on my dad's we come from Holland(again several generations back), but I don't know any specifics.

Oh! Except that my great-great(great?) grandmother worked as a maid for Queen Victoria for a while.

I think the only claim to 'fame' my family has is being a direct descendant of John Alden, who came over on the Mayflower. My great-grandma was very proud of this fact.

Semi-distantly related to that guy.

Otherwise, my mom's side was one of the southerners who fought for the union.

Well aside from my prominent writer parent, not really anyone else. There's a Hollywood director out there with a variant spelling of our very usual name, so he's probably some kind of distant cousin.

My mother's side is most likely descended from Crusaders, though! They have a non-local surname and were all super Catholic. It's really difficult to find out much more before emigration in that branch though (and all the Jews are even worse documented).

My Grandpa wrote this.

Without really knowing much about my ancestry beyond grandparents though, I don't know if I have any better claims to fame. XD

I'm apparently related on my mother's side through the O'Connors to the O'Malleys to Grace O'Malley. AKA Granuaile, pirate queen of Connacht. I mean, with four centuries worth of generations in between, but still.

Mind you, apparently there are several branches of my family that run high with wreckers, pirates, raiders, and on my father's side at least one genuine hitman in more recent history (1920s).

So ... more notorious than famous, really?

I just asked my mother "We're not related to anyone infamous or famous or interesting, are we?"
Her answer "No. Just you."

Apparently really distantly: Kurt Cobain

Otherwise Steffen Iversen a Norwegian soccer/football player, oh and I am 1/5th or something Tater, which was like the Norwegian Romani, before the state managed to make 'em disappear. I am also really, really Norwegian, as in except my tiny part Tater, you have to look really hard to find someone not Norwegian* in my ancestry, except those who went over to America to find a better life. Fun fact of the day: There are more Americans with Norwegian ancestry than there are Norwegians in Norway.

*There might be a tad bit Swede in there somewhere, but if I ever get that confirmed I will deny it until the day I die!

Distantly related to Thomas Hart, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The name "Hart" pops up in middle names in our family at least once a generation as a result.

Sadly, i just don't know. My mom's family (German) has no records past three generations, since it was all lost in the bombings in the war. My dad's side is Portuguese, and they don't seem to have any knowledge of any family *not* Portuguese, and certainly nobody famous.

I find it hard to believe that both sides of my family are exclusively German/Portuguese. I'd love to do one of those DNA tests where it shows all the different ethnicity in your ancestry. I'm sure we have *something* else in there somewhere!

(Just no Native American, since both sides of my family are relative new comers to the 'new world' and didn't marry outside of their, uh...countrymen until my parents.)

This guy! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Frelinghuysen_(1787–1862)

He ran for Vice-President with Henry Clay. He was also an outspoken critic of the Indian Removal Act, which I think is pretty cool.

He made a pretty long speech about how awful it was. I've always really liked the end of it: "How shall we justify this trespass to ourselves? Sir, we may deride it, and laugh it to scorn now; but the occasion will meet every man, when he must look inward, and make honest inquisition there. Let us beware how, by oppressive encroachments upon the sacred privileges of our Indian neighbors, we minister to the agonies of future remorse. I have, in my humble measure, attempted to discharge a public and most solemn duty towards an interesting portion of my fellow men. Should it prove to have been as fruitless as I know it to be below the weight of their claims, yet even then, sir, it will have its consolations. Defeat in such a cause is far above the triumphs of unrighteous power." So maybe a little pompous, but not a bad dude.

also relayed to a bunch of other prominent Frelinghuysens but he's the only one who did anything really notable.

My maternal grampa swears we're related to Violeta Parra and I really like to believe it's true, because it'd be the neatest thing ever.

We share the Sandoval surname, and we're from the same region, in which everyone was the cousin (sometimes fraternal and sometimes x-times removed) from absolutely everyone.

My uncle once went on a quest to trace the family name. He found evidence that we were Vikings. There was also some stage actress we're related to (but I can't remember her name), a politician or three, a Minister, and about half of Ireland. Nobody you would recognize (except the politicians), but interesting folks.

My mom's side produced a Revolutionary War soldier, who was given land in Georgia after we kicked out the British. Again, nobody you would recognize, but Mom's thinking of trying to join The Daughters of the American Revolution.

Andrew Jackson and Thomas Jefferson (distantly for him.) I know the Andrew Jackson part because we have the genealogy papers, but the Thomas Jefferson connection just sort of popped up when my grandmother found out she'd been accepted to the DAR.

That said, I'm far more interested in my great grandfather who scammed people out of their valuables during the Great Depression, personally.

Get ready for this; I'm part Chinese on my father's side, due to his father marrying a Chinese convert. Unfortunately, all the records of her and her family were lost so it;s impossible to track down the Chinese side of the family.

However, I am also... kinda royal... in my mother and father's side?

To put it simply, my father's father was part of the royal family (or families) of Sumatra and they fled during the Dutch colonial era to Malaya. My mother's side came from Negeri Sembilan but also have some blood links to the noble houses of the Klang valley. However, they were... evicted/dethroned during the British era and several generations later, I was born.

My family still keeps heirlooms and we still do a few traditions that wouldn't make sense to outsiders, such as dressing in yellow when I was born and passing heirlooms to the next generation (namely, me and my sisters). However, due to my mother's side intermarrying with the Minanagkabaus (an ethnic group that is really matrilineal (females take precedence over males)), all the properties in the kampung (my grandmother's house, for instance) will go to my mom and my aunts instead of me or my uncles.

...Yeah, my family is really weird. ^^;
