So who are you related to?
(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)I'm distantly related to George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who backed the expedition that discovered Tutankhamen's tomb and whose country home is where they film the "upstairs" bits of Downton Abbey. I also may have had ancestors on the Mayflower, but records are too spotty to confirm that for certain.

Oh! Except that my great-great(great?) grandmother worked as a maid for Queen Victoria for a while.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)Semi-distantly related to that guy.
Otherwise, my mom's side was one of the southerners who fought for the union.
Re: So who are you related to?
My mother's side is most likely descended from Crusaders, though! They have a non-local surname and were all super Catholic. It's really difficult to find out much more before emigration in that branch though (and all the Jews are even worse documented).
Re: So who are you related to?
Without really knowing much about my ancestry beyond grandparents though, I don't know if I have any better claims to fame. XD
Re: So who are you related to?
(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 02:46 am (UTC)(link)Mind you, apparently there are several branches of my family that run high with wreckers, pirates, raiders, and on my father's side at least one genuine hitman in more recent history (1920s).
So ... more notorious than famous, really?
Re: So who are you related to?
(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)Her answer "No. Just you."
Re: So who are you related to?
Otherwise Steffen Iversen a Norwegian soccer/football player, oh and I am 1/5th or something Tater, which was like the Norwegian Romani, before the state managed to make 'em disappear. I am also really, really Norwegian, as in except my tiny part Tater, you have to look really hard to find someone not Norwegian* in my ancestry, except those who went over to America to find a better life. Fun fact of the day: There are more Americans with Norwegian ancestry than there are Norwegians in Norway.
*There might be a tad bit Swede in there somewhere, but if I ever get that confirmed I will deny it until the day I die!

Re: So who are you related to?
Just some hard working and some not so hard working folks.

Re: So who are you related to?
I find it hard to believe that both sides of my family are exclusively German/Portuguese. I'd love to do one of those DNA tests where it shows all the different ethnicity in your ancestry. I'm sure we have *something* else in there somewhere!
(Just no Native American, since both sides of my family are relative new comers to the 'new world' and didn't marry outside of their, uh...countrymen until my parents.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 03:20 am (UTC)(link)He ran for Vice-President with Henry Clay. He was also an outspoken critic of the Indian Removal Act, which I think is pretty cool.
He made a pretty long speech about how awful it was. I've always really liked the end of it: "How shall we justify this trespass to ourselves? Sir, we may deride it, and laugh it to scorn now; but the occasion will meet every man, when he must look inward, and make honest inquisition there. Let us beware how, by oppressive encroachments upon the sacred privileges of our Indian neighbors, we minister to the agonies of future remorse. I have, in my humble measure, attempted to discharge a public and most solemn duty towards an interesting portion of my fellow men. Should it prove to have been as fruitless as I know it to be below the weight of their claims, yet even then, sir, it will have its consolations. Defeat in such a cause is far above the triumphs of unrighteous power." So maybe a little pompous, but not a bad dude.
also relayed to a bunch of other prominent Frelinghuysens but he's the only one who did anything really notable.
Re: So who are you related to?
We share the Sandoval surname, and we're from the same region, in which everyone was the cousin (sometimes fraternal and sometimes x-times removed) from absolutely everyone.
Here, have an anthology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX5_3zucJsg
Re: So who are you related to?
My mom's side produced a Revolutionary War soldier, who was given land in Georgia after we kicked out the British. Again, nobody you would recognize, but Mom's thinking of trying to join The Daughters of the American Revolution.
Re: So who are you related to?
(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 03:35 am (UTC)(link)That said, I'm far more interested in my great grandfather who scammed people out of their valuables during the Great Depression, personally.

Re: So who are you related to?
However, I am also... kinda royal... in my mother and father's side?
To put it simply, my father's father was part of the royal family (or families) of Sumatra and they fled during the Dutch colonial era to Malaya. My mother's side came from Negeri Sembilan but also have some blood links to the noble houses of the Klang valley. However, they were... evicted/dethroned during the British era and several generations later, I was born.
My family still keeps heirlooms and we still do a few traditions that wouldn't make sense to outsiders, such as dressing in yellow when I was born and passing heirlooms to the next generation (namely, me and my sisters). However, due to my mother's side intermarrying with the Minanagkabaus (an ethnic group that is really matrilineal (females take precedence over males)), all the properties in the kampung (my grandmother's house, for instance) will go to my mom and my aunts instead of me or my uncles.
...Yeah, my family is really weird. ^^;
