Don't listen to that person.

Getting published is hard but it's possible. It doesn't have to be a major publisher. There are tons of small presses accepting submissions. You could self publish--there are authors who have had success with this, and no it's not all ridiculous porn.

If you are serious about publishing, there are a lot of authors and agents and editors who give free advice online on how to do it.
