Oh that pisses me off.

My baby goes to daycare in blue rompers with dinosaurs on them because they are fucking cool looking! She also wears pink ones with flowers and whatever. But screw this color thing. Both my girls have looked fantastic in blue and I hate that they don't make girls clothes in blue.

Also, my older daughter always wants to be male characters for Halloween (we had a long convo over lunch yesterday about how she likes female characters but always fantasizes that she is the male characters from her favorite shows and what she thinks that means), and if she wants to be Legolas, then Legolas she shall be!!!!

Maybe she wants to be the male characters because, unfortunately, a lot of the male characters still get to do more cool stuff than female characters? That certainly holds true in LotR/The Hobbit where there's only one female character who does anything action.

I think you are totally right re: LotR. We've talked before about how disappointing she finds the lack of women in the series.

I think there's something more to it though because one of her other favorite shows is Farscape and she thinks Aeryn is awesome and kickass, but she always pretends to be Crichton instead. It's very interesting.

I used to fantasize about being male characters when I was little. I would dream about being the manly hero who rescues the princess. Later, there was a time when I wondered if this meant I was gay, but looking back on my early fantasies, there was never any romance or sex involved (I was really little, so this isn't surprising regardless of the genders and sexualities involved) and the fantasies pretty much ended with the rescue, like I'd completed a level on a video game or something. I realized it wasn't about wanting the princess, it was about wanting to be the hero and I was awash in stories where the hero was male and rescuing a princess was just what heroes did, so that's how my fantasies went.

This sounds a lot like my daughter. She definitely wants to be the hero, and I think that's what a lot of her play revolves around.
