Bottom pic is Galadriel warning Frodo how she will be corrupted if he gives her the Ring. It has been literally decades since I've read The Hobbit and I never saw the latest movies, so I can't recall a female elf called Tauriel at all.

...that said, every time I have seen the background pic in a secret lately, I have pretty much the same reaction as OP.

She's an original character added to the movies because The Hobbit is such a sausage-fest. I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the movie, I like her.

+1

She's an original character, but don't fret about not remembering her. My mom loves Tolkien and the only way she figured Tauriel was made for the film and not from something like the Silmarillion was that her name started with a consonant and "most of Tolkien's female characters start with a vowel - well, except for Galadriel."

(I'm not sure how right she is on that, but I thought it was funny.)

Nah, plenty of Elven female names start with consonants, especially the Sindarin ones. Nerdanel, Finduilas, Nellas, Nimrodel, Mithrellas, fricking Luthien, off the top of my head.

Suddenly, I'm feeling some love for Tolkien.

I read The Hobbit eons ago and now it's a mish-mash of what I read and that animated thing from years ago. And I read some of The Fellowship of the Ring, but I couldn't finish it (look, I like trees, but nowhere near as much as he did). But naming Elves Nerdanel and Nimrodel, well, that's awesome.

Nimrodel is one of my fave Tolkien names, and he came up with a lot of damn awesome names, without even getting into the meaning behind them.

I really hated The Hobbit book when I read it. I was too old for it by then, but I just don't get the people who want the films to be more faithful to be book, it was so dull and barebones. That said, my love for the Tolkien legendarium is boundless. I think it's actually more fun to approach those books as though they were history and genealogy tomes rather than works of literature. Certainly for The Silmarillion.

I think Nerdanel is Quenya, or at least it better be, or else Tolkien dropped the ball badly on translating names for the various branches of Finwë's family.

Tauriel is an OC insert, and a painful one at that.
