I'm so scared to see that movie because I know I'll be emotional and probably cry a ton.

My prof wants us to watch it for a Civil War class I'm taking and I already can't get through the textbook without ranting for a while every chapter.

If you can't get through an academic text, this movie will certainly get to you. It's a wonderful film, but mostly because it doesn't flinch from the horrible parts of this time period. There's certainly no "Gone with the Wind" romanticism of the Southern plantations here. The main character's emotional journey is heart-rending.

I don't think I cried, but I'm not prone to it myself. I have a friend that had to leave the theater when we saw "The Pianist". She thought she would be able to handle it because there were no actual shots of the concentration camps, but the ghetto scenes alone broke her down. It's all about knowing what you can handle. And that's fine! It's good to be self-aware. Read the wiki page summarizing it. Or Solomon Northup's memoir.
