Are the characters confirmed European?

With anime, it's wise to assume Japanese until proven otherwise.

I assumed it was future Earth with a reset calendar. What with the talk about people exploring Earth extensively in the past, and that most of the records have been lost, along with the population of Asia... lots of past-tense with implications of a global fallout thereafter (that was probably caused by, or enabled, the Titans' existence).

the anime takes place in what is assumed to be AU europe or something - the characters have names like Eren Jaeger, Bertholdt Fubar, and Jean Kirstein. There is one character named Mikasa Ackerman, who is half japanese (assumedly, they just say "asian"), and there's a backstory about her and her mother being the last humans of asian heritage in this colony of people.

With names like those I can't assume them to be anything but European, even if it's Fantasy Europe.

My favorite thing about the names is that Petra has the closest thing I've ever found to my last name, fictional or not.

I've looked a lot and haven't even found what my last name even means.

Have you ever seen Japanese people that were named "Jean Kirschstein" or "Eren Jäger" or "Erwin Schmidt"? And we're not talking about Japanese people who were born in Germany/France/etc.

Also, the whole architecture looks like Heidelberg, Germany. I would say in this case, it is safe to assume that the cast is supposed to be predominantly European.
